Small town, big mountain and always SO SPECIAL

By Monyse Bélisle, Ski Product and Marketing Director

When you vacation in Steamboat, you’ll get much more than you bargained for; with a real town, and a mountain averaging 883 cm of Champagne Powder® snow that covers the six peaks towering over it. The snow adventures that await you will be legendary—groomed cruisers, bumps, steeps, terrain parks, open meadows and the best tree skiing and riding on the planet. The town offers 100+ restaurants and bars, three craft breweries, three full-service supermarkets, hot springs, night skiing and for those who just never get enough, cross-country skiing can also add to your alpine skiing week, and access is available almost right from downtown.

Most Steamboat hotels and condominiums offer guests private shuttle service throughout Steamboat Springs, and many offer on-demand transportation service as well. The city also has a comprehensive system of FREE transportation between the ski area and downtown as well as lodging, dining, shopping and entertainment locations.

A big bonus is also that children 12 and under ski and rent free when parents/grandparents purchase lift tickets and/or rent equipment for 5 days or more. The resort also offers a Kid’s Vacation Center, and is one of the premier kids’ facilities in the U.S. aimed not only at teaching skiing and snowboarding, but teaching kids in particular. The programs are truly designed around taking care of children aged 6 months to 6 years in a safe, nurturing and fun environment. The resort also offers a kids-only ski & snowboard zone with its own surface lift and lots of fun terrain features.

Accommodations at Steamboat include a wide range of hotels and condominiums, ranging from 5-star luxury residences to humble lodges, along with plenty of ski-in/ ski-out options. I just can’t wait to go back!

Text from 2015-2016 ski magazine

By Paul Dubrûle, Ski Sales Director

In 1913, a young Norwegian named Carl Howelsen arrived at Steamboat… with a pair of skis and a whole lot of ambition. At the time, he probably could not imagine that, by organizing countless ski events and a winter carnival, he would change the face of this small Colorado town forever. One hundred years later, Steamboat is still defined as “a real ski town” alive with the energy of the innumerable skiers who visit this resort every winter. I love recommending Steamboat to families as well as glade enthusiasts and even those who, on ski trips, love to explore and discover vibrant little towns.

We love Steamboat for the glorious glades that cover close to 50% of the mountain. Skiing the dense aspen forest is a pure delight, especially in the Christmas Tree Bowl or down the No Names chute—my favourites on Mount Werner. Those who love steeps and double blacks will enjoy the Morningside Park sector. Families will adore this resort for its great choice of intermediate runs, but especially because kids under 12 ski for free with a stay of 5 days or more. The mountain even has special stations where families can pick up little red wagons to help carry their equipment from one spot to the next. Steamboat resort is also located a stone’s throw from the downtown core, which has a total of 16,000 rooms for you to choose from. Or, you can opt to stay slopeside and use the free shuttle to get around.

Either way, you are sure to get a kick out of the Wild West feel of the town, somewhat reminiscent of Fernie. The fact that ranches are as much a part of the local economy as the tourists certainly has something to do with it! I’m always impressed with the incredible line-up of activities this town of 12,000 has to offer. Guess this place lives by the mantra “eat, sleep, ski!” So, don’t miss the (Steam)boat! Plan your getaway to this unique skier/cowboy paradise today!
